Establishing Faith

An amazing number of people live with both faith and fear. Fears come in all sizes and varieties. Some are in the category of “my little fear,” for example, of trying to never upset anyone, and some are the “big fear” varietal of “what happens when I die?” The Bible talks about all these concerns. The antidote to fear is establishing faith in God.

1. Releasing our Trust

“My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense. I shall not be moved” (Psalm 62:5-6).

Once we release the matter of concern in prayer to God, we must choose to trust that God is at work on our concern. We can choose to worry about something again and fret. Or we can start with trusting God for our petition throughout the night. We hand it over to God and let Him hold the matter while we sleep. We can pick it up again in the morning, of course. Or we can make a new choice to believe He’s at work on the matter, leave it with Him, and go about our day.

People tend to worry about their loved ones who may not be walking with God. Or who have a challenge in their life. Or who are making some poor decisions. So we pray. We can worry about things until we see the change. Or we can take the matter to God and release our trust and believe that He is at work on the prayer request. God is very patient and will wait till exactly the right moment to ask a poignant question to the individual or make himself known to them. These tend to be life-changing moments.

If we can’t relax until we see the matter accomplished, then that is waiting for change or a new fact before we allow ourselves to relax, and believe and trust. That is not faith. That is living by seeing the change first and then we know it is okay. Faith is living in trust that God is at work on our prayer request before we see the result to our prayer request.

2.  We grow from faith to faith

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving” (Col 2:5-7).

We grow from faith to faith. When our faith gets stretched and we see the result, we cement that faith stretch with thanksgiving. Then we go through another faith stretch and survive. Then, we thank God for this faith growth.

This is how faith grows, builds and gets established. Faith grows. We express thanksgiving. Faith grows some more, and we give thanks for all that that trial taught us.  It’s a process of establishing faith.

3.  Faith is a Partnership

“Commit your way to the Lord [roll and repose each care of your load on Him]; trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident) also in Him and He will bring it to pass…Be still and rest in the Lord; wait for Him and patiently lean yourself upon Him; fret not yourself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked devices to pass” (Psalm 37:5,7).

God invites us to roll our concerns on His shoulders and He will go with us through every part of the journey of our lives. This is an incredible offer. God is with us throughout life. This promise is a faith builder. He knows the way. He is our guide. He cares about what is best for us. He is our provider, our comfort, and our friend. These commitments from God are designed to help us navigate through our fearful moments. The promises in Scripture become our anchors through life’s storms.

God Answers Prayer

One lady, recovering from brain trauma, said she could stand better and take more steps after prayer.

One lady had a stress level in the 5 to 6 range. At the end of the appointment, the stress was at 0. The appointment focused on releasing calm and being confident that God is capable of working all things out for good.

The prayers requests were for God to act on many issues including life stressors, cancer, diabetes, constant pain, healing a scar, relationships with family members, issues with lust, recovery from COVID, recovery from a car accident, relationships with adult children, high blood pressure, the need to find someone to drive them to a doctor’s appointment, financial concerns, direction, decisions to make, and caregiving of parents.
