The Physicality of Worship

One of the main reasons we worship is to shift our focus from ourselves to God. What we focus on, we empower. We may walk into a church service not feeling “in the mood” to worship. However, when we join in, the physical acts of worship start to get us moving to the music and singing. Whatever we brought into the worship service thinking about (including our finite humanity, our problems, our limitations, our relationships) starts to shift as we listen to the words of the songs highlighting God’s character and abilities. Our attention turns to God with whom ALL things are possible. Worship pulls us from focusing on our aches and pains, illnesses, lack, limitation, or poverty to God’s limitless ability to meet every need, to heal, to bless, to comfort, to problem solve, etc.

Worship has to do with praise. Here are some Hebrew words that are all translated as the word “Praise.”
– SHUWR: to sing while strolling
– YADAH: to lift your hands in worship
– TEHILLAH: spontaneous, unrehearsed, prophetic song
– BARAK: to kneel or bow before the Lord in adoration and surrender
– HALAL: to make a show, to boast, to be clamorously foolish, to rave, to celebrate
– TOWDAH: extending the hand, as if offering a sacrifice (praising when you don’t feel like it)
– ZAMAR: instrumental praise and worship
– SHABACH: a loud shout of praise
– CHUWL: a spinning dance that has to do with travail and birthing
– MACHOL: a round dance, a dancing chorus
– GUL: to spin around under the influence of intense emotion
– MACHOLAH: a dance company
– KARAR: to dance in a circle or whirl, leap or run
– REKAD: to dance, leap, jump, skip or spring about wildly for joy
– DALAG: to spring or leap
– PAZAZ: to leap, to bound, to be light and agile
– HILLIYKAH: a walking procession or march

Look at how many of these words have to do with physical activities: leap, extend the hand, dance, sing, shout, kneel, bow, lift hands, and spin. Have you ever been to church and the pastor asks everyone to stand up to sing the next hymn? People groan, grumble, reach for assistance, wiggle, and stand. Part of worshiping and praise is aligning our bodies with our spirits. It creates agreement between our bodies and the Holy Spirit. Miracles usually involve motion and action. Sometimes being in motion while being in worship, allows us to align with the miracle working power of God. Moving our bodies in worship can prime the pump for God’s miracles to happen in our bodies.

When Jesus sent out the disciples (and us) in Mark 16 to heal people, He specifically said, “they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover” (Mark 16:18). We at the Silicon Valley Healing Rooms see healing happen routinely by phone or on Zoom despite distance and time changes. But when praying in person, the physicality of putting a hand on a shoulder or holding a hand adds the powerful agent of touch in praying with a person for healing.

So practice adding some physical movement to worship—at home, or at church, or even in car while driving. (Maybe just lift one hand while driving, letting the other hand stay on the wheel.) Consciously praise God and activate healing prayer.
God Answers Prayer
Since our last Healing Rooms Open Hours:

A woman’s stress went from a 7 to a 0. She described her appointment as, “wonderful.” Since the appointment, she’s been taking a fresh look at her interactions with family and colleagues. Letting God’s love and perspective into the mix has made a difference.

One man reported back that he had received a job offer from a company “out of the blue” (after prayer!). The company had previously said there were no openings and he did not make it onto a certain team (that he had been hoping for and thought he had a good chance at being hired.) Somehow his resume did not get tossed out. Two months later the same company called back and offered him a position he did not apply for. He truly felt it was an answer to prayer. It felt like a resurrected hope after the finality of the first rejection.

We saw several appointments with challenges to marriages, especially Christian marriages. It felt like a wave of similar prayer requests. God had words and ideas for each appointment. We prayed against the schemes of the enemy for marriages. We prayed for a revitalization of love into each relationship and God’s love to infuse into every marriage. God takes the covenant part of marriage very seriously. The team members felt led to pray for all marriages in their spheres of influence.
The teams prayed for anxiety, marriages, dental matters, a broken wrist from pickleball, heart healing, strength to take action, wisdom, childhood trauma, cancer, collapsed lung, diabetes, fibromyalgia, God’s peace and strength, relief from fear and worry, high blood pressure, AFIB symptoms, rapid heartbeat, perseverance and endurance, life direction, whether to move or not, relationship with adult children, legal court cases, faith renewal, breakthrough in circumstances, counteracting witchcraft, workplace challenges, a new place to live, coping with the loss of a loved one, caring for a loved one, financial breakthrough, sciatica, lung cancer, sleep disorders, and trauma from an accident several years ago.
