Turn Toward God
One of the privileges of being a Christian is walking in restored relationship with God. Being human, we live in a world where we make mistakes, do/say things we wish we could take back, and sometimes mess up big. When it’s our fault, it causes, guilt, regret, and shame. Most of the time, we try to fix things ourselves. When we can’t easily “fix it,” we make a choice to turn toward God for help, or turn away from God. God has established a process for these situations to get back into relationship with God through confession, forgiveness and reconciliation.
Some sins impact ourselves and people more than others. These kinds of sins and experiences that happen to us can result in shame. Patterns of sin, and the inability to stop the pattern on our own, can also bring shame.
Adam and Eve may not have known how far and wide the impact of their choice to eat a forbidden apple could reach. (See Genesis 3:1-19.) But, suddenly, they knew they were naked, and they instinctively felt the need to hide from God. Then they blamed someone else for their action. This pattern holds true today when we commit a sin, fall prey to an enemy lie, or get impacted by someone else committing a sin. It can take time to fully recover, process the event, and heal.
Spiritually, the key is turning to God and not away from God. Often there’s a tendency to fix matters ourselves and not let anyone know about it. Or, there’s a tendency to sweep it under the rug. Or perhaps, we might run from the situation, or deny that it happened at all because of the backlash or to avoid scrutiny. All kinds of scenarios have been played out. Ultimately an individual has to come to peace with themselves, and with God. Nonetheless, circumstances well-hidden for years can resurface when least expected.
A maturing relationship with God will also bring these matters up at some point for processing, so they don’t ferment inside of us. Working with another “safe” person in confidentiality helps. Sometimes a piggyback spirit of shame will land on the emotion of shame until it is prayed off. Working with God in Scripture can bring healing. The Bible is filled with men and women who experienced many situations they had to work through. This includes heroes like King David (murder, rape), Samson (disobedience, broken covenant, lust), Moses (murder, exile, workaholic), Matthew (extortioner of his own people), Peter (impetuous, betrayer, liar), and Saul/Paul (murderer, hunter of men.) All of their stories changed when they stopped and turned to God. They acknowledged their sin, repented, received forgiveness from God, and moved forward to fulfill their destinies before God and men. Remarkable. Some even made it to the Hebrews 11 Faith Hall of Fame.
Whatever has happened to us, whatever we have done, or whatever generational pattern we were born into, it is possible to turn to God at any point in our lives. Whatever it is, it does not disqualify us from fulfilling God’s destiny for our lives. None of us are a surprise to God. His plan for each of our lives factors in what our past is, and provides a way forward through Christ—by choosing forgiveness, and His redemption. Our destiny is through the door of identity in God’s family. Staying in shame is like being on a huge detour from the path of life. Turning to God, and allowing Him to show us how to get back on His life-giving path for us, is how to live an abundant life. (see John 10:10). God’s Word promises, “For the Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame’” (Romans 10:11).
God Answers Prayer
Since our last Healing Rooms Open Hours:
A woman’s stress went from a 5 to a 0. She described her appointment as, “encouraging.” Since the appointment, she’s been able to stay in God’s presence. She says all the words have come true.
One woman said that as soon as the team prayed for her, she felt better. And a few hours later, she had more energy.
In one appointment, the team prayed for a woman who had an interview for a job. She wrote to say that she felt like God told her to relax. Talking to the hiring manager went well and she felt like she could be herself. She is headed to the next round of interviews.
A woman who has a long-term autoimmune issue came for prayer. Her pain/stress level went from a 7 to a 4. She said it was an amazing appointment. The team got words ahead of time from God and shared the words. The woman felt she got an answer from one team member to a prayer request that she had been asking God about. And she got some wisdom about a boundaries issue from another team member.
The teams prayed for anxiety, marriages, dental matters, a broken wrist from pickleball, heart healing, strength to take action, wisdom, childhood trauma, cancer, collapsed lung, diabetes, fibromyalgia, God’s peace and strength, relief from fear and worry, high blood pressure, AFIB symptoms, rapid heartbeat, perseverance and endurance, life direction, whether to move or not, relationship with adult children, legal court cases, faith renewal, breakthrough in circumstances, counteracting witchcraft, workplace challenges, a new place to live, coping with the loss of a loved one, caring for a loved one, financial breakthrough, sciatica, lung cancer, sleep disorders, and trauma from an accident several years ago.
