Believing What God Says About Us

Words can hurt. Fact. Ouch. Especially when the words are said by a loved one or a respected one, they can cut through every defense and wound at our core. People can say whatever they want, but it doesn’t make it true. People are allowed to have opinions and verbalize what they think or believe. An opinion or a judgment isn’t necessarily an accurate analysis. False accusations tend to cause upset. People can experience distress, anger, depression, or worse. When a parent, teacher, boss, or spouse says something, there’s an extra sting because they know us. We wonder if that accusation is true.           In moments like this, we need to test what people say verses what God says. What God says about us should always be our truth. For example, people may say we’re ugly, yet God says He is enthralled with our beauty. “So the King will greatly desire your beauty” (Psalm 45:11). He made us to look exactly the way we do. And He called it good. As one popular song suggests, He made us, and He wouldn’t change a thing.
If someone says something derogatory about us, we can go to God and seek the truth. Someone may call us too skinny, or too fat, or too emotional, or too stoic, etc. These are opinions. What is God’s opinion? We need to seek God’s opinion and work with Him on a plan for things we can change or adjust. We don’t need to be on another person’s plan for how they would change or adjust. It is our choice on who to agree with. Other people might suggest impossible plans, but God’s plan for us is always doable.               truth   Sometimes people say things that have truth in them. If someone says we work too hard or too little, and there is some truth to it, then we can ask God what He thinks the right amount of work should be. It may or may not be what the other person suggests. Working with God on a plan usually involves more grace than critical people give. If someone says that we react too quickly or too slowly to something, again, we can take this to God and get His opinion. God is gracious with us in our efforts to correct or adjust something in us.     The enemy whispers lies to us, and it can be relentless. We need to speak back directly to enemy with sentences of truth from Scripture. Sometimes the enemy uses other people to say mean or critical things. Sometimes loudly. Sometimes repeatedly. We need to hold up the truth of Scripture in these moments. It may not be wise to say God’s truth out loud to their face. But we can let their words fall between them and us. Then we can look at them with God and compare what God says with what they say. The we can choose to let God’s truth be true over our lives.
  • God is FOR me. He is helping me in every area. (See Romans 8:31.)
  • God will never give up on me. (See Deuteronomy 31:6.)
  • I am HIS workmanship, designed for good purposes. (See Ephesians 2:10.)
  • I am His Design Plan (Isaiah 64:8.)
  • I am a work in process. I am being transformed every day. (Romans 12:2.)
  • As I confess my sins, I move forward forgiven. (Colossians 1:4.)
With God’s Word as truth over our lives, we live free and forgiven. Jesus said He came to give us life and life abundantly (see John 10:10). For more sentences of truth based on Scripture, you can request the Silicon Valley Healing Rooms Compilation called “How God Sees Me.”
