Getting More Hope

When we run out of an item in the kitchen, we put it down on a grocery list. Then we go get some more of the item at the appropriate store. But where do we go to get more hope when we run out? In Scripture, people ultimately turned to God. Usually, they tried several other alternatives first. But ultimately, they returned to God to find lasting hope. They realized the answers they wanted in life were found in the life that God recommended. They went back to the things God had done for the Israelites over the centuries. They called upon His character trait of mercy time and time again over the centuries. Bad times caused them to consider how far they had wandered as a people group from the ways outlined from the time of Moses. They got back to the basics of the 10 Commandments lifestyle once again and called upon God to save them from whatever disaster they found themselves. They repented of their sins and prayed for deliverance from their oppressors. And every time, God came to the rescue. God was their hope and salvation, even when they forgot this truth.

Where do we go today when we need more hope? It doesn’t always work to simply hope for good times to return. To the innocent bystander, it might seem like good times always do return. However, to the person with a spiritual awareness, there is a process of seeking God, asking forgiveness, and re-establishing a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. People with a faith in God live in covenant. And it helps to read the fine print of the covenant from time to time.

Let’s look at two verses in Romans 15 to see what it recommends for hope. “Now may the  God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Now I myself [Paul writes Romans] am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also do admonish one another” (Romans 15:13-14, NKJV). There are so many nuggets in these verses, but let’s look at five of them.

1. “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing…” What we believe, at our core, matters. It determines how much hope we can pull out. Needing hope is a good time to re-examine what we really believe about God and His ability to do what He promises.

2. “…by the power of the Holy Spirit” No matter how far the Holy Spirit may seem, it is a time to re-connect with the Holy Spirit and lean on His power, not ours, to seek more hope. Start with asking Him to provide focus and awareness of the steps to accessing more hope. He has a way of highlighting for each person what we need to remember, or focus on, from Scripture, or from our past experience of God’s faithfulness to us, or from a sermon, or from someone else’s story of relying on God. Whatever, however, the Holy Spirit offers His power to access hope

3. “full of goodness…” Paul referenced the good actions of the people that they had displayed in the past. These good actions reflected the good hearts of the people. It may be time to increase our good actions points, so that the Holy Spirit can fill us with hope. Isn’t it true that we get buoyed in our spirits when we offer to serve and bless others. Keeping our offerings and efforts up primes the pump of hope. It is not formulaic. But God provides opportunities (that we usually don’t like to act on) that result in giving us perspective and hope for our situations.

4. “full of knowledge…” The beginning of wisdom is the fear of God. Many brilliant people study specific areas of expertise. But being an expert in science at one point in history changes the minute something else is discovered or known. When we study the knowledge in the Bible, it lasts into eternity. Being full of knowledge might start with something as simply as re-reading the book of Proverbs over the next month. Or reading the words of Jesus. Or reading a commentary on one of the Old Testament prophets. It may sound boring at first. But applying it to our current circumstances (that may not be giving us hope) usually offers different insights and perspective that can give us a new way to look at things. The words of God often come alive, and give life. “Simon Peter answered, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You [alone] have the words of eternal life [you are our only hope]’” (John 6:68, AMP).

5. “able to admonish one another…” It helps to have friends who are wise and trustworthy. This may not be a bestie. It may someone who acts like an advisor from time to time. Some people establish accountability partners in their lives. We can ask the Holy Spirit which person to talk to for any one situation, and wait to see to whom He directs us. Talking to wise people can give us hope. Especially wise people who regularly seek God for His wisdom in their lives and for us. Even if we don’t like what they have to say, if it’s true, it will ultimately provide hope.

In conclusion, where do we get more hope? From the God of all hope. He talks about it throughout Scripture. You are welcome to ask for a list of Hope Scriptures compiled by the Silicon Valley Healing Rooms. This is a great “Go To” set of scriptures that offer reminders of God’s promises about hope.

God Answers Prayer

Since our last Healing Rooms Open Hours:

One woman’s stress went from a 7 to a 5 (on a scale of 10). She said her experience was insightful. The team gave her something to focus on that gave her hope. She has been trying to find time to read her Bible daily since the appointment.

One woman described her experience as comforting. She felt the team members were present with her. The team heard from God ahead of time with verses that fit her current situation “pretty much exactly.” She felt a little calmer after the appointment.

One person said their stress went from a 3 to zero. She described her experience as “great.” She received words of encouragement, comfort, and healing. She left the appointment with an expectation to receive from God what He has said in Scripture.

One woman came to the Healing Rooms with a stress level of 6 and left with a level 2. She felt the words she received from the team members confirmed some things she had heard from God two years prior. She felt God spoke directly to her through the prayer session. She left with more peace and faith that God is moving in her life.

The teams prayed for issues around anxiety, marriages, dental matters, heart healing, strength to take action, wisdom, childhood trauma, cancer, diabetes, fibromyalgia, God’s peace and strength, relief from fear and worry, high blood pressure, AFIB symptoms, rapid heartbeat, perseverance and endurance, life direction, whether to move or not, relationship with adult children, disagreements with neighbors, faith renewal, breakthrough in circumstances, counteracting witchcraft, workplace challenges, settling in to a new place to live, caring for a loved one, financial breakthrough, sciatica, sleep disorders, and trauma relief.
